Four Considerations Why You Should Make Wooden Toys For Your Children
Toys are most important because they teach children to interact with the world around them. Toys will help them to learn the law of cause and effect, and they will practice a lot of skills that they will need as adults.
I recently learned that the first toys in history are discovered by Archaeologists in Egypt. These toys from about 4000 years ago, were made out of natural materials such as stone or wood. Ancient toys were mostly made by the parents or family of the children who used them.
Is this only history, or can we still make wooden toys for our (grand)children?
Just take some time to read the rest of this article and you will understand why we still can.
Safety and durability
All parents want their children to play in a safe environment. For that reason responsable parents prefer wooden toys at home because they are safer and longer-lasting than their plastic equivalents. Plastics can become brittle with age and have a tendency to break into sharp shards. Besides that plastic toys are likely to contain toxic chemicals, which are used to harden or soften the plastics.
And best of all wooden toys are strong. They can handle the child's rough handling and the toy will be still perfect and unbroken. This gives your child freedom to do anything with the toy it can imagine. The fact is that wooden toys can last for many years. Many kids visiting their grandparents will play with the wooden toys that their parents used when they were young
Educational Benefits
Kids sitting in front of a television is not the playing environment most parents seek for their kids.. Rather than simply watching a screen, children benefit from the use and manipulation of real wooden toys. Do you know that a child's ability to handle his toy as he wishes builds creativity and decision-making skills? Playing with real wooden toys also stimulates his imagination and builds hand-eye coordination.
Wooden toys give your kids an opportunity to create new games each time they play with them. For this reason kids will keep coming back to play with these toys. This makes wooden toys the best choice for your child.
Fun to Make and Fun to Give
Most children love wooden toys, and a lot of (grand)parents love to make these toys. Just think about the satisfaction you will experience when you see your (grand)children play for hours and hours with a home made wooden truck, wooden doll's house or rocking horse?
I am over 50 years of age now, but do you know what I still remember of my childhood? Yes, I still remember the wooden toys my father made for me and my two brothers.
Easy to Make
"Easy to make?", you will ask. "I am not an experienced woodworker, not even a skilled hobbyist." That may be true, but let me give you some tips for beginners:
As a starter:
- Read some books about different type of woods and how they can be used, various tools, etc
- Find a skilled person, and ask him to help you with your first project
- Find a simple project to start with, like a birdhouses and feeders or different kind of wooden toys.
And best of all there are many woodworking plans available for non skilled woodworkers. No I don't mean cheap, difficult to read copies. I mean clear, detailed, and step-by-step guides on how you can make wooden toys, tables, book cases or plant holders. When you start with a simple project, then I am sure that you will become a passionate woodworker and your (grand)children will be very happy with the results of your hobby.

I was looking for some sort of storage unit other than the typical toybox (which we already have). We also have the 12 bin pastel storage organizer, so I was looking for something that would match and go well with the other organizer, but not the same thing. I was a little hesitant to buy this because I couldn’t find a single review on it, and I’m a huge stickler with reviews. I decided to go with it anyway because the picture was adorable, and looked like it would do the job. It comes with the two main side pieces, and then the other pieces that go into the main part. The storage compartments come exactly as pictured (one pink, yellow and blue) and are a fabric material. The one side has ABC and the other side has 123. It was super easy to put together (this is a female writing the review), and had it together in about 15-20 mins. The instructions were very easy to follow, and all the parts were there. Once it was put together, it was very sturdy, solid piece of furniture, and holds quite a bit of stuff for my daughter’s playroom. I am very happy with my purchase, and glad I decided to go with the storage unit.

In all the years i’ve spent assembling and cursing furniture from a certain Swedish Furniture MegaCorp, i never thought i’d see a more cryptic set of instructions. Beck International rose to that challenge.
In all, it’s a pretty simple assembly, but the instructions do their best to hide that from you.
Also, if you’re as lucky as i was, instead of getting 4 short screws and 8 long screws, you’ll get 4 short screws, 1 medium screw, and 7 long screws.
Once built, this tower is fairly sturdy, but could have been a lot better with a little effort. The drawers just rest on ledges built into the sides of the tower, with nothing above them. This means that if you pull the bottom or middle drawer more than halfway out (as the blue one is shown in the picture), it pitches forward since nothing stops the back from lifting up. Also, the drawers themselves are thin cloth, so you can’t pull them out to function as portable bins.
(And if you’re curious about the actual dimensions: the drawers are each about 1 foot long and 1 foot wide, and about 5 inches deep. The whole tower is about 3 feet tall.

The product actually holds more than it appears to. A huge issue we had was with the hardware holes. We actually had to go in and drill the holes a bit more as they were drilled crookedly by the manufacturer. It’s extremely cute and durable so we actually use it as a place to put toys.

I bought 3 of these for my play room. One for each childs toys. We have had them for over a year and I love them!! They are easy for the kids to manage. My youngest is only 7 months old so its great for me to just pull out one of his drawers and put it infront of him to play. I would defenitly buy them again.

I bought one of these toy bins just before Christmas when they were on clearance (for like $17) and when it arrived, it included the right number of pieces but didn’t have an ABC side and a 123 side, so we couldn’t figure out how to assemble it right away since it was like receiving two left shoes.
Called Amazon, they sent out a replacement, but in the meantime my hubby figured out how to assemble the first one by drilling a couple of new holes (instead of using the pre-drilled ones that didn’t match up) and we just figured we’d keep them both.
The second set arrived and it was similarly odd with the opposite problem the first one had (ie, two right shoes). The second set had only ABC sides and was slightly different than the first in just about every way. On first glance, they look the same, but all the pieces are cut just a little bit different from the other one… ie, 1 inch thick pieces versus 2 inch pieces of wood. And the second one had a convenient addition that I wish the first had as well… little stoppers so that there’s only one way to put the bins in and they stop when they’ve reached the end. The first unit doesn’t include those, so you can literally push the bins directly through from one side and out the other, dumping it all out the back if they aren’t up against a wall (which my two-year old figured out and thought was really fun).
Anyway, for the cheap price, they do the job they’re intended to, but I’d caution that the shipped quality may vary from unit to unit. Still, I’m glad we have them since they keep all the little toys and junk contained and they’re easy enough to assemble and use that my two year old can help put her own toys away at night. And they are cute.

I got the first one and was excited, but after 6 out of 8 screw heads stripped using the included allen wrench and gentle pressure, I was left with a toy box that had more loose screws than not. I emailed the company and they sent a replacement (entirely new toy box) and told me not to use power equipment. I reassured them I did not. Guess what, same issue with the second box. I have put MANY big entertainment centers/cabinets together with no problems. By the time I worked to remove the stripped screws and replace with some i bought at home depot, I had two hours in a toy box that should take less than 30 min to put together. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone.

I purchased this toy box as a gift for my grand son’s bedroom. It did not last a month before it started coming apart. Would not recommend this particular toy box if you want something strong and durable. Now I have to purchase another one. What a waste.

I loved this product when I saw it, since it meets all of my 1 year old grandson’s needs and is simple in design so can be put in any room. We had to purchase a stop so that he couldn’t get his fingers pinched when lowering the top. It could “scissor” him on the sides when being lowered. The quality is good and it was very easy to put together.

This is a really nice looking product and we really like it. It had a smell from the varnish but it is fine now. However, the lid broke and separated from the hinges. The seller has been VERY helpful in getting us a replacement lid but it seems to be a manufacturer’s defect as the lid does not install correctly so it eventually breaks off.
